Location

Minnesota State University-Mankato is located in the upper Midwest of the United States in the state of Minnesota. It is roughly 75 miles (121km) and about an hour (driving) outside of the Twin Cities, also known as Minneapolis-St. Paul. Minneapolis is the 16th largest city in the United States and the largest city in the state and St. Paul is the state capital.

Cultural Contribution Scholarship

All undergraduate international students (F-1 and J-1) automatically receive the cultural contribution scholarship their first semester. If international students want to keep this scholarship after the first semester, they must:

  • Keep a term GPA of 2.5 or a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Have a valid F-1 or J-1 immigration status
  • Successfully earn at least 12 credit hours each semester
  • 25 hours of cultural contributions during each semester when you receive the scholarship

“The International Student Association (ISA) is  student-run senate where international student organizations participate,” Dr. Anne Dahlman explained. “ISA puts on events and partner with other departments to highlight countries.”

Some examples of how international students can share their cultures are Nationality Nights and the International Festival.

“We do not concentrate on just 1-2 regions,” Dr. Dahlman explained when it comes to how the university recruits international students. “The philosophy of our university is to bring students from all corners of the world to Mankato. We use word of mouth and have staff specialized in certain areas to help students get acclimated. We are very diverse for being in southern Minnesota.”

“We have six trained immigration advisors to support students in feeling at home on campus and in a new country, in addition to an assigned academic advisor for each student from their major,” Dr. Dahlman shared. For example, we have an Arabic-speaking assistant director, Arabic-speaking police officers, we have a mosque in town, during holidays we can use campus facilities for prayer, and we have lots of active student organizations and community partners. Students feel comfortable here.”
