Mary-Magdalene Chumbow from Cameroon, studying at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, has been selected the winner of the International Student Voice Summer Photo Contest. As the winner, she will receive a $500 scholarship to help with her studies during the 2018-2019 academic year.
More than 30 international students entered the contest for a chance to win the scholarship. Students were asked to submit a photo, along with a caption, describing what life is like in a new country. Judging was based on 60% creativity, quality, and caption and 40% based on Facebook likes.
After the top 10 photos were selected based on Facebook likes, from those 10 photos the winning photo was selected based on creativity, quality, and description.
“All the photos brought a different point of view of what life is like in a new country,” Carrie Circosta, Editor in Chief shared. “So that made it more difficult to select just one winner. But it was the quality of Mary-Magdalene’s photo and the hopefulness she felt and so eloquently described in her caption that made her rise to the top.”
Please see the image and caption below for Mary-Magdalene’s winning submission:
A year before this photo was taken, he had not dreamed of visiting and living in the places he has been to so far.
Today, seeing my eight-year old with a pink selfie stick in hand and #BlackPanther Tee Shirt on his body, taking a selfie with the big White House on 1600 Pensylvannia Avenue in the background, I believe this is just the beginning of something beautiful.
This gives me hope for the new life we just started in this new country, the USA; Hope of exposure, adventure and growth, together.
