Yes, we’re officially into the New Year and if you haven’t realized it so far, we’ve almost completed the first month of this calendar year. Time travels fast, right? We’ve so many resolutions made in the last month and early this month, but wait, are we on track with them? Well, statistics say otherwise.
According to one study from the University of Scranton suggests that only 8% of us will achieve our resolution goals. Now, that’s quite an alarming figure!
If you find yourself hitting a rut, then brace yourself because we have a plan that could help salvage your New Year resolutions in just 7 steps:
- Find Your Goal’s True Purpose
On most occasions, we choose a dream based on mundane factors that predominantly depend on others instead of us. Brush aside all such reasons and go for a goal that resonates with your true desires and values. When you have something that aligns with your personal school of thought and aspirations, you are more prone to stick to it and even work hard to achieve it.
2. Set Realistic Goals
One of the greatest hurdles to the successful realization of an aim is setting an unrealistic goal. If your objective isn’t totally feasible, it is nothing but a vague idea in the air. Instead of shooting for the stars at the first go, aim for a reasonable and attainable goal, such as losing realistic number of pounds or percentage of body fat, and then set a deadline. The more achievable the goal, greater the chance of sticking to it.
3. Follow The SMART Technique
Here’s your chance to get SMART with your aspirations, quite literally.
It’s the idea that all goals should be:
- Relevant, and
Follow this strategy and you would have put your best foot forward. Make sure your ambition is clear, precise, time-defined and realistic. Adhering to these pointers will help you inch closer to success.
4. Make A Detailed Plan To Assess Past and Present
A goal without a plan is like setting out on a journey to a mystical place without a map. It is pivotal to have a detailed analysis of the past — especially if you decided to execute a similar goal earlier — to understand the flaws with that plan. This would equip you with the knowledge to better carry out your plans for the accomplishment. Get specific with your goals, chalk out an action plan and execute it. Greater the detail, greater the chance of attaining success.
5. Go A Step Further — Mark Your Calendar
How many times we plan to do things only to excuse ourselves later by saying we don’t have enough time to accommodate them?! Well, it turns out that putting the activities on our calendar would help us to save time for a given activity at hand and in turn make sure that we indeed did it. For example, if you have chosen to lose weight, make sure you block a slot on your calendar to go to the gym, run a mile, or anything that supports in accomplishing your goal.
6. Train Your Mind
We know, you have probably heard about this advice a million times — stay focused. And although it is extremely cliched, focus and discipline are the primary ingredients for this recipe to churn out success. Regardless of how much you face defeat or discouraging comments, stay put and keep going. At the end of the day, it is your determination and passion that will help you accomplish your goals. Patience is another important trait because of course, Rome wasn’t built in a day!
7. Document Your Progress
“We write to taste life twice, in the moment and in retrospect,” said renowned American diarist, essayist, and writer, Anais Nin. Writing down your accomplishments and failures helps to reinforce your routine and provides an opportunity to analyze your progress since it forces you to pause and think about what you’re doing. According to one study, researchers found that participants who put their goal intentions in writing were roughly three times more likely to stick to the plan than those who did not. The pen is mighty indeed!
So, here were the 7 simple (well, almost) steps to help you ace your goals. Remember it is only your dedication and hard work that can bring you unprecedented success. Fight the clouds of uncertainty and unleash your inner potential — yeah, you got this!
