The Global Gator Scholarship is an exclusive opportunity for international students at the University of Florida to win a $2,500 scholarship. In order to win, participants had to create a video showcasing the cultural and lifestyle differences between their home country, the United States, and being a University of Florida Gator.

The videos were judged based on creativity and quality.

The three winners share their gratitude and advice for other international students.

Ying He

Home Country: China

How did you feel when you found out you were one of the winners of the Global Gator Scholarship? “This is actually my second attempt for the video contest. Ii did it once when I just came to Florida and of course I didn’t win that time. And after one year of learning and experience, I feel like I have grown more than I can ever expect both psychologically and professionally.”

What do you hope other international students learn from watching your video: “Enjoy campus life.”

What advice do you have for new international students? “Get involved. Don’t waste your time on watching television in your language every day.”

Arnav Bhartiya

Home Country: India

“I was in some financial trouble when I came across the advertisement for the scholarship. Although totally new to the field, I knew this was an one time opportunity and I had to go for it and give my 100%.

Although, I thought that I did my best, but I was skeptical given the fact that students from Arts and Media with experiences might also participate. So it was  overwhelming for me when I got the mail from UFIC that I was one of the three selected. I was in the bus when I got the mail and I could not react there but as soon as I got down, I called my family to celebrate because they were also very worried about me.

When I was on the drawing board for the video, I realized how hard it was to summarize India in a short video so I had to go with Kolkata, its cultural capital.

Lastly, I just want to say to all the international students that they should make the most of being in such an awesome place.”

Shichang Liao

Home Country: China

How did you feel when you found out you were one of the winners of the Global Gator Scholarship? “When  I knew that I was one of the winners of the Global Gator Scholarship, I was very happy and I knew all my efforts were rewarded. And also, even though I didn’t win this competition, more than 25,000 people had watched my video and that is enough.”

What do you hope other international students will learn from watching your video?  “I just want to show them some differences between America and China, and this is the title of my video.”

What advice do you have for new international students? “Just enjoy your life here.”
