With the upcoming U.S. presidential election in 2016, candidates are trying to gain support. But the recent statement from presidential candidate Donald Trump goes too far.
In light of the upcoming 2016 presidential election, on Monday, December 7, 2015 Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump made the following statement
“calling for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country’s representatives can figure out what is going on”.
As a voice and advocate for international students, it is our responsibility to speak out against such an offensive statement. ISV Magazine does not support or oppose any presidential candidate, but when such a statement is made it is our responsibility to confront it.
Excluding any group based on religion, ethnicity, or background is contrary to the values and the foundation of the United States of America.
The First Amendment of the United States Constitution states:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
As an inclusive magazine we embrace the diversity of our writers and our readers. We are passionate about sharing the stories of students so we can fully serve as an advocate. By sharing these stories, students learn from each other and are prepared to confront issues with intellect, reason, and respect and not make rash decisions out of fear or rushed misjudgments.
We share stories and resources, but it’s much more than that. We stand together for a hopeful future. Education, not fear is the key to ensuring we have a future.
