For Nadiia Misa, 19, this was her first time in the United States. She arrived in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware from Kiev on exchange with CSB International.

According to the Cape Gazette, on June 5 Misa was riding her bike at 8:50 p.m. when she tried to cross an intersection. She was struck by a 2005 Chysler Crossfire driven by 30-year-old Daniel L. Furr Jr. She was taken to the hospital in critical condition and pronounced dead the next morning.

The Cape Gazette also shared Misa had signed up for a bike safety course shortly after her arrival in the States, but ended up canceling it.

This is a sad reminder how an exciting and life-changing experience, such as studying abroad in another country, can also take an unforeseeable turn. One can’t live in fear, but one can be cautious and take safety precautions.
