The International Student Voice Magazine team will be attending the Association of International Educators (NAFSA) conference in Boston, MA. What is NAFSA and why should international students care?
NAFSA: The Association of International Educators is an organization that provides professionals working in the field of international education the training and support they need to serve international students and U.S. citizens studying abroad.
So this means international student advisors, international student recruitment officers, almost everyone in an international office at a university/college has probably attended a NAFSA conference.
We’re heading to NAFSA in Boston this year to bring all the latest updates to you May 24-28.
How often is the conference?
NAFSA is split up in different regions. Every year each region hosts their own conference. So for example, Region 6, international education professionals working in Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky get together for their own NAFSA Region 6 conference.
Once a year there is also a national conference, meaning all the regions come together in one location. This year the national conference will take place in Boston, MA. Each year the national conference takes place in a different location. Last year the national conference took place in San Diego, California.
So, what happens at a NAFSA conference?
Short answer: A LOT.
In order for international educators to stay informed about international student needs and immigration procedures, they attend sessions during the conference. The different sessions focus on different areas, such as:
- International student and scholar services
- International educational leadership
- Education abroad
- Teaching, learning, and scholarship

There is also an exhibition hall. Companies, businesses, and universities from around the U.S. and the world set up informational booths and tables to share information with conference attendees. During the conference is also a time for many business and education partners to meet to discuss contracts and just to touch base.
Why Should International Students Care?
The journey of an international student begins before even leaving home. These international education professionals serve as liaisons between the institutions, U.S. government, and the students. If they aren’t trained and updated on latest policies, it affects international students BIG TIME. These are also the folks advocating for international education and students to study in the United States.
