"Uncle Phil" from 'The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air' dies at 68

Actor James Avery, best known for his role as Uncle Phil, or Philip Banks on the TV show ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’ died at the age of 68.

It was confirmed Avery passed away on Tuesday. His manager said the death was caused from complications after open-heart surgery.

Avery grew up in Atlantic City, New Jersey and served in the Navy during the Vietnam War.

Aside from being Uncle Phil, because of his deep voice he often played judges, professors, and doctors. His most famous voice roles were playing Shredder in the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” series and James “Rhodey” Rhodes in the 1990s animated series version of “Iron Man”.

But his most famous role of playing Uncle Phil will be forever in our hearts, portraying the often stern, yet lovable uncle of Will Smith.

Alfonso Ribeiro, also known as Carlton Banks, tweeted about the passing of Avery.
