Burnin' Strings on the Violin

Yang Zeng, an international student from China beat out 30 other people to earn a spot in the Akron Symphony. He talks about studying in the United States and plays the violin for us!

Yang studies violin performance at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio. He came to the U.S. in August 2010 and will graduate in May 2014.

He recently tried out and got a position with the Akron Symphony in Akron, Ohio.

Why did you decide to study in the United States?

Because I think there’s more opportunities here. I already had the best teachers in China and I thought this was a better chance to see the world.

What was your first reaction coming to the U.S.?

Really big countryside compared to Shanghai, the noise, and it’s less crowded.

What has been the best thing about studying in the U.S.?

More opportunities to play the violin and learning different techniques.

What has been the not so great things about studying in the U.S.?

Missing family, I haven’t been back to China since 2010 because I have a lot of recitals. I might go back next year.

How did you get selected for the Akron Symphony?

I first learned about the position in August. I tried out against 30 other people and got the position. I’m on my F-1 visa and this will count as CPT.

What advice would you give other international students about being successful?

Worker harder, love what you’re doing.

Please enjoy watching Yang play the violin!
